The Ingredients
Lactobacilli: Lactobacilli (L. acidophilus, L. rhamnosus, L. casei, L. salivari-us) are located in the small intestine and produce lactic acid. Many strains of bacteria from the Lactobacillus family have been shown to support regularity, urogenital and vaginal health, production of the lactase enzymes and protect the gut lining from unwanted materials.
L. plantarum is abundant in the human mouth and gut. L. plantarum has anti-oxidative effects. Plantaricin, produced by L. plantarum, is a antimicrobial compound against potentially harmful bacteria.
L. rhamnosus is one of the most well-studied friendly bacteria. It is found naturally in the human gut. L. rhamnosus has a strong ability to adhere to the linings of the large and small intestine. Proteins secreted by L. rhamnosus influence the intestinal epithelium and improve mucus secretion and integrity. They also contribute to immune homeostasis.
L. fermentum is found in humans in the mouth, gastrointestinal tract and vaginal tract. Infants are known to acquire L. fermentum during natural childbirth, after which it then lives in the infant colon. An anti-oxidative effect of L. fermentum may ameliorate the increased oxidative stress linked to aging and low-grade inflammation.
L. acidophilus was one of the first bacterial species considered to have probiotic properties. The species is naturally found in the gastrointestinal tract and oral cavity of humans. L. acidophilus secretes potent bacteriocins and other antibacterial compounds, which may promote a healthier intestinal microbiome.
L. casei is a well-studied species known to survive in different types of environments and temperatures. It is found within the digestive tract and reproductive system in humans and has for many years been used as a probiotic.
L. paracasei exists as a common inhabitant of the human gastrointestinal tract as part of the normal microbiota. The species is known to have immunomodulatory effects and may stimulate the intestinal barrier.
L. reuteri is a naturally occurring species in humans, found in the gastrointestinal tract, skin, urinary tract and breastmilk.
Bifidobacetrium: Bifidobacetrium (Bifidobacterium Breve (UABb-11™), Bifidobacterium Bifidum (UABb-10™), Bifidobacterium Longum (UABI-14™)) are strain of y-shaped bacteria that have been recognized for their ability to assist the body in the breaking down of fiber and other complex carbohydrates. These beneficial bacteria can only be found in the intestines and make up less than ten percent of the total bacteria found in a typical adult gut microbiome, but Bifidobacteria are essential for producing a variety of chemical compounds that can help support optimal whole body health, including short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), other various fatty acids and crucial B vitamins.
Streptococcus Thermophilus: a strain of probiotics even less prevalent in the body than Bifidobacteria, but this strain is known for being more durable than more common strains of probiotics. Streptococcus thermophilus has been recognized for the ability to support healthy GI and immune function while being able to withstand more severe conditions in the gut.
Fructooligosaccharides (FOS): a type of organic carbohydrate that has also been classified as prebiotics. Probiotics actually feed on prebiotics for much-needed energy and enhanced function. In addition to enhancing probiotic function, prebiotics have also been recognized for the ability to promote the production of other microbes that can help the body achieve a healthy balance of bacteria in the gut.
